Thank you for reading, sharing your recommendation, and asking that question! I think a LOT about core values, e.g., I've started organizing my goals in line with the values I want most to nourish. I believe that "values" is just shorthand for those things we need to have a meaningful and fulfilling life. I also believe that emotions are events (they happen) not actions (we choose them). That said, they are great little messengers, and when we hold back from just trying to make our emotions go away we get to be curious about why they're there in the first place. To your point, and marrying my two beliefs above, we may not choose our emotions but we do choose our circumstances and our stories for how they show up when they do. And recognizing that we're out-of-step with a core value, which might be leading us to feel yucky in some way, is a really great insight. And, again, an insight that we might not get to if we just "shoot the messenger" of our emotions and try suppress them. Long reply, great question!
